Chateau Montelena's beautiful Chinese garden, Calistoga, CA...... wine.about.com says this: In an uncanny combination of East meets West, the stunning stone castle of the Chateau Montelena Winery is backed by an equally breathtaking Chinese garden and surrounding lake. Both impressive landmarks pay homage to previous owners, Alfred Tubbs who originally established the winery in 1882 and more recently to the Franks family who retired on the property in the mid-1950s. It was not until 1972 that the Barrett family took the reins and started making wines at Chateau Montelena. As time would soon tell, Chateau Montelena got off to a flying start with their legendary 1973 Chardonnay.
